On 22 August 2026, Mrs. Punwipa Na Bangchang Wiesener, Acting Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong, alongside officers from the Royal Thai Consulate-General, observed the Thai Language Proficiency Test for Non-Native Speakers of Thai 2026, jointly organised by the Royal Thai Consulate-General, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Hong Kong, and the Sirindhorn Thai Language Institute, Chulalongkorn University. This year's test was sat by 44 examinees from Hong Kong, Macau and the Greater Bay Area, reflecting the growing popularity of the Thai language among the general public.
The organisation of this test is one of the Royal Thai Consulate-General's projects that aim to promote the Thai culture and language as a form of Thai soft power abroad. The test also helps foster the academic cooperation between Thai and overseas educational institutes. Currently, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures of the University of Hong Kong offer the Thai language as one of the elective and minor courses available for its students.
