On 18 September 2026, Mrs. Punwipa Na Bangchang Wiesener, Acting Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong, alongside the Foreign Consular Corps in Hong Kong SAR, signed the book of condolences for the passing of the Honourable Tung Chee-hwa, former Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, at the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Hong Kong SAR.

The Honourable Tung Chee-hwa served as the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR after the handover in 1997 under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. Tung's leadership saw Hong Kong SAR overcoming both the Asian Financial Crisis and the SARS outbreak. During his term, he also helped promote ties between Thailand and Hong Kong SAR. Most importantly, he championed the fostering of closer economic cooperation between Thailand and Hong Kong SAR after the Asian Financial Crisis and played a crucial role in concluding the Thailand - Hong Kong SAR Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement in 1997.
